Gemming your gear can be a brainbusting endeavour. What gems are good for us? Which gems should go in which sockets? When is a socket bonus worth pursuing? I have a number of yellow gems in my gear, but it was only after I sat down and did the math that I decided to make some serious changes.
You may be sitting on an untapped potential. No doubt your two blue gems and 17 red gems are beneficial to you, but there are a few more points to squeeze out here and there. Whether you want to get your hands dirty, or simply want to have a table of reference, lets get our hands dirty and look at some gems!
There are a total of five gems that you could, should, would ever consider for your gear. These are pure spellpower, spellpower + spirit, spellpower + crit, spellpower + haste and hit. I suppose you could consider a spellpower + hit gem, but as with the pure hit gem, this is generally not something you would want to pursue. We have a lot of hit from gear anyways, and you should only resort to gems with hit on if you are missing the last few points. Even then, one might consider not caring about gemming to get that last two hit rating before the cap, because two spells missing out of 10.000 casts does not seem like a big deal. So for this post, we will focus mainly on spell power, haste and crit.
First, we must establish how much each stat is worth. Again we zoom back to the numbers provided by Elitist Jerks, which weigh our stats as follows:
Spellpower: 1.4
Haste rating: 0.9 (1.5 if not soft-capped)
Crit rating: 1.1
Intellect: 0.6
Spirit: 0.5
Next, we calculate the worth of each gem:
Spellpower = 23 x 1,4 = 32,2
SP/Spi = 12 x 1,4 + 10 x 0,3 = 21,8
SP/crit = 12 x 1,4 + 10 x 1,1 = 27,8
SP/haste = 12 x 1,4 + 10 x 1,5 = 31,8
SP/haste = 12 x 1,4 + 10 x 0,9 = 25,8 (above 400+ haste)
The numbers are quite clear: Spellpower takes the lead, followed suit by SP/haste if you are below 400 haste rating, and with SP/crit as a close contender. I have personally been soft capped on haste since late Naxxramas, so this hasn’t been an issue for me, and the major focus is then on pure spell power and SP/crit gems. Obviously, you will want to use two blue gems (SP/spirit) to activate your meta, and you should try and put these gems in an item where you actually benefit from the socket bonus. If you have three blue slots in your gear, you take the blue slots that lead you to an increase in spell power, and not the one that gives you +10 intellect.
Funny thing about socket bonuses, they can change the layout of our table above. Red is often the obvious choice for us, and it should be used in every red socket, but there are times where this little gem gets outshined by the runner-up. Its crucial to identify when one gem is better than the other, and it is worth to take a look at your socket bonuses before you simply smack your gear full of Runed Cardinal Rubies.
Lets say you have a yellow socket with a +5 spell power bonus. This is generally the lowest spell power bonus you will find (I don’t remember seeing any +3 SP bonuses), and it might be interesting to see how you could gem this. You could use a pure, red gem and simply gain 32,2 points (remember, we are talking item weights here, not DPS or stat bonuses per say), but then you would forfeit the socket bonus. Consider, instead, a SP/crit gem, which is already worth 27,8 points, and then add the additional 5 spell power: (12 + 5)x 1,4 + 10 x 1,1 = 34,8. What we find is that the SP/crit gem is better, marginally, but still better, than the pure spell power gem. Then again, it is an 8% increase in points, so across several yellow slots, it might prove to be beneficial. You would only do this if the socket bonus has +5 spell power or more, and only if you can actually get the socket bonus. Those pesky yellow/blue sockets are probably not worth pursuing.
What if you have an item with two yellow sockets? Two red gems would give you (32,2 x 2) 64,4 points, but no socket bonus. Two SP/crit gems would give you ((12 x 1,4 + 10 x 1,1) x 2) 55,6 points. This is 8,8 points below the pure SP gems, but we haven’t added the socket bonus yet. 8,8 points worth of spell power equals (8 / 1,4) 6,3 spell power, so it will be worth pursuing if the socket bonus offers you +7 spell power or more. If the socket bonus is something like +haste, +int or +spirit, its generally not worth it.
The actual differences can sometimes be quite small. You can go for the socket bonuses with +5 SP on dual yellow if you wish, and there will hardly be a difference, but if you really want to min/max a lot, this is probably something you would want to consider.
A TL;DR version for gemming:
Have two blue sockets with SP/Spi
Single yellow sockets, where you can score a +5 SP bonus, use SP/Crit
Dual yellow sockets where you can score a +7 bonus or above, use SP/crit
Red sockets (or blue/yellow sockets with bad bonuses) use pure SP
Please note: Crit is nice, but don’t overdo it. Spell power is still the most powerful stat you can get, point for point, and you will reach the soft crit cap at some point (42% crit fully raidbuffed). Crit doesn’t stop being useful at that point, because it still benefits wrath, eclipse proccing, moonfire crits (with tier 9) and especially with the 4pt10 bonus, but if you find that you are reaching the crit cap, you may consider ditching a few of your SP/crit gems. I’m still doing research on this issue, though.

when i mouseover your pure hit gem, its a haste gem. This confuses and angers me. Nice post though. Been messing with this same issue myself.
Oh dear! Well, its corrected now
Thanks for the heads up!
I always go for the hybrid gem instead of the pure spell gem when I get a decent (+5 SP or more) bonus. Spirit has an *intangible* bonus; I obviously don’t *stack* spirit, but when I don’t avoid it I can usually get enough spirit to noticeably increase my mana regen and allow me to peel off one more mana regen talent. The other big thing is that I use emblems of heroism to purchase my epic gems and I hate dropping 20 emblems on a cardinal ruby.
I dont know about you, but i haven’t had mana problems in ages. The only mana talents i have are a single point in Moonglow (because I have to) and Omen of Clarity. I usually never go below 80% mana. Spirit does me no good
It’s not something I notice in 25 mans, but in 10 man groups, with 2/3 dreamstate, in mostly ilvl 232 gear, I sometimes have mana issues. This is probably due to not having all the buffs that I’d get in 25 man. If I don’t have to battle res, and I can use innervate on myself, I am always fine, though.
But even if I didn’t have mana issues, I’d go for spirit/spellpower if it gave me a +5 spell power bonus, simply because I am saving up my emblems for heirloom gear, and don’t want to blow 20 on a ruby
Yeah but, you see, most of my mana regen, if i look at recount after a fight, comes from moonkin form, ei the crits i make. Up to some 80% of my mana regen comes from that. Upping your crit would ensure more mana regen from moonkin form – much more than you could ever dream of getting from spirit.
Hrm.. what is your armory intellect/crit % value? I’m at 1064/26.26% and I’m wondering if I shouldn’t drop dreamstate as well.
Ack! Didn’t realize you had your server/name on the blog. Looks like we’re about even crit wise, and you’ve got about 140 intellect over me. So I should figure out how much the difference in my mana pool makes, but I’m guessing I can ditch dreamstate as well. Thanks!
WHAT IS WITH THESE COMMAS. GOD AND BABY JESUS INVENTED A DECIMAL FOR A REASON.
Silly Europeans.
Duskstorm: I just remember that ive had next to no problems even from back in Ulduar, when my crit was much lower. I am almost sure that you don’t have to run around with dreamstate (without knowing your armory, ofcourse).
Sunfyre: You don’t like my commas?
Thats how I was taught to write decimals back when I was in school
Its not my fault that you silly americans can’t do proper math!
Qieth, I just dropped from 2/3 dreamstate down to 1/3 dreamstate to pick up typhoon for saurfang. Cleared through saurfang last night, and I barely made it through most attempts mana wise. I had to give up my innervate since we were two healing it, and needed a pot to get through most attempts. However, we replaced a feral druid with a shadow priest (our only source of replenishment) and I was fine. So, now it’s time to figure out where to put that last point of dreamstate. I could go 1/2 gale winds..
My main is on aggramar, clearly gear wise if you were able to drop dreamstate in ulduar I’m ready now.
Instead of dreamstate, grab 2/3 Intensity – it’s a better mana regen talents even with our spirit being at an all time low.
I’m also 10man only raiding – and lack of replenishment kills us harder than lack of bloodlust or stamina buffs – it really is an important buff. Luckily, it’s obtainable via plenty of classes and you really should have it if you take 10man raiding ‘seriously’. Providing I have Replenishment, I can manage fine with only the single point in moonglow which is pretty standard to get lower into balance. If we ever have to raid without replenishment though, going 2/3 Intensity in Resto is the most efficient mana per talent point we have available when comparing Dreamstate and max moonglow.
Sorry, another mistake.. I was talking about intensity. I ditched dreamstate in Ulduar too. I apologize for the wasted mental cycles. Haven’t been sleeping much
In that case, you just need to except the fact you need Replenishment in your raids
As for the left-over talent point – I’ve stuck an odd point in Owlkin Frenzy, I’m considering a single point in AoE though – I’ll see what sort of mechanics the second wing of ICC brings…
Are you guys getting crit buffs from Imp SB or Imp Scorch? I’ve noticed that the 5pct crit gives me a lot more mana back. I don’t really know if it’s Replenishment that you need. I’ve looked at my combat parses, and I get much more mana back from Improved Moonkin Form (from crits) then anything else.
We usually have replenishment in raids, but it is still a very small part of our mana regen. Crit is really the biggest factor. All starfires crit inside lunar eclipse, and that basicly makes them free, and all other starfires and all wraths have about 58% chance to crit for me in a fully buffed raid. If about half of the wraths crit, then all of them are pretty much free aswell.
The only times I use innervate these days are on ICC trash, because we more or less just AOE it all down.
Merry Xmas Q. Keep on squawkin in the new year.
how important is the owlkin frenzy talent i have speced it some time ago and found it not to be a big signifigance. i oppted out on trees and got the tidal wave talent for the surafang fight. just wondering about owlkin and its importance for me.
Treants are very good. You generally dont want to miss out on the ability that does the single highest damage for one GCD. Treants will do 30k+ damage, just on one single cooldown. Get them.
Typhoon is generally not needed, but even if you want it, you will usually have spare points if you are decently geared, and have a good mana regen. I have two spare points, which i put in owlkin frenzy, because typhoon is generally not needed – don’t even use it for Saurfang.
Owlkin Frenzy is fun, but its nothing major. Its nice to see those big crits once it procs, but its simply because theres not really anything else to put it in.
But please, do get treants.
thx for the advice im workin on a spec to include trees but would like to pick your brain more if possible. would loggin on your server and whisp you be a problem?
Sure, go ahead – you can also use http://qieths-quips.com/contact/ to send me a mail – might be easier for linking stuff and such..
Hey, I just noticed that spirit is weighted .5 but when you calculated the SP/spirit gem, you multiplied spirit by .3, is there something I am missing. I know boomkins turn 30% of spirit into SP, so if you wanted to multiply spirit by .3 you would then have to multiply that number by 1.4 to get its weight. I may be wrong but it seems you have the sp/spirit gem slightly under valued.
Nevermind, the .3 appears to be a typo, you do seem to have multiplied the spirit by .5.
Im kinda curious about the single blue sockets with a 5sp bouns.
when I watch u on armory qieth, I see that in your MH wep, u go with a pure sp gem, but in your “ring of rapid Ascent” u go with a sp/spirit gem. Any good reasons for this, if so, please tell my why =)
Because we need two blue gems for our meta. I have that in my chest and my ring, so unless the socket bonus for the blue gem is massive, i wouldn’t gem more than two blues
