I get a lot of questions from people asking how to gear up their moonkin. Links to armories, comparasons between this item and that and so on.
Unfortunately, the answer is not always as clear cut as one might think. There is a lot of things to take into consideration, and to perform to our fullest we need to know what to aim for.
Our stat priority has changed a bit over the last few major content patches. It can be difficult to keep yourself up to date, so lets take a good look at our stats, once and for all.
First off, I would really suggest that you check out a few simulators. The best one, in my oppinion, is Hamlet’s Wrath Calc. It has the benefit over simulators like Simcraft that it is tailored for moonkins, and is made by a guy that does a lot for the druid community.
You could, ofcourse, follow his Moonkin DPS Compilation, which should give you all the basics you need to perform well. In this, the stat prioritation looks like this:
Hit rating (to cap) >> Haste rating (below GCD cap) = Spellpower > Crit rating (below Lunar cap) > Haste rating (above GCD cap) = Crit rating (above Lunar cap) >> Intellect > Spirit.
These comparasons are not 100% accurate, but they are close enough to give you a good reference. If you don’t like messing with Wrath Calc, this will do fine. But if you enjoy theorycrafting as much as I do, I would urge you to plot in your numbers in Wrath Calc and see what turns up.
In my current gear, with 4/5 tier 10, haste and crit soft capped, my stat benefits are something like this: (I’m sorry, I have to do it by memory. I will update this tomorrow)
- Spell power: 1,79 DPS
- Crit rating: 1,06 DPS
- Haste rating: 1,42 DPS
- Spirit: 0,5 DPS
The increase in the value of haste comes largely from switching to tier 10. More casts means more languish procs, and we are sitting on 60%+ crit no matter what when fully raid buffed, that haste wins by a slight amount compared to crit. There is still a lot of confusion going around about haste – people still can’t seem to shake the notion that it’s “bad because it doesn’t affect wrath”, and they forget that crit is “bad because it doesn’t affect starfire”. Both of these notions are untrue, since we don’t have a 100% uptime on Nature’s Grace, and we do cast starfire outside of lunar eclipse. With my stats, haste wins out over crit, but that doesn’t mean that crit is bad.
If you had to choose between an item with 50 haste and 50 crit, the difference in DPS would be around 18 DPS. Then again, an upgrade is an upgrade after all, and we have access to items that allow us to get both haste and crit. The way you go about it is to figure out the stat gains for each item, and calculate the effective DPS using YOUR values, to see which item is the better upgrade.
This also has an effect on how you should gem. I am currently using a lot of SP/crit gems, because crit was previously stronger than haste. I feel okay about not changing my gems for a very, very small upgrade until I exchange the gear – we can’t go and remove ALL of our crit, because we still need to mind our caps, and the difference between a SP/crit and an SP/haste gem is currently 2,3 DPS. But since I am aware of my stat values, I can plan ahead.
There is also the question about spirit. Should we take cloth pieces with crit/haste over leather pieces with spirit? Sure, if you can, and the actual benefit is better for you. But don’t disregard spirit completely. If you have the choice to upgrade to a spirit item, which will turn out to be an actual upgrade, by all means do it. My preference is cloth gear for most non-set slots, but that doesn’t mean that I would pass off on an upgrade.
So where do you go now? You go download Wrath Calc. You put in your stats (remember to add the effective bonus from any trinkets you have like Muradin’s Spyglass or Illustration of the Dragon Soul). Make sure your talents are set up correctly, and tell the spreadsheet if you have Nibelung, Reign of Dead, 4pt10 or 2pt9. Once it is finished calculating, you will have a solid guideline for which stats to look for, and how to gear up in the future.
DO NOT go into a haste frenzy. Remember that drastically changing your haste will effect the way it works for you. My advice for you is to try to increase your haste and crit as you go along, and whichever stat has the higher priority according to the simulator, you aim more for that, usually in the form of gems. Don’t simply assume that because my stats look like this, your will too.
Once you are done with that, you have all the tools you need to evaluate future upgrades. But don’t stop there; Wrath Calc has many features that you can play around with, and you should explore the spreadsheet to the fullest. Whether you are playing around in Naxx, or fighting the forces of Icecrown Citadel, a little bit of research can give you the edge and increase your performance!

Thank you for your information, now I’ve got something to play around with in between wipes xD
I myself still have far too much haste (somewhere around 700) considering, that I still didn’t reach the crit soft cap. To reach the hitcap I’m currently using hit/haste items, which isn’t optimal itself.. I’m going for the T10 pants now (last T10 item) which should provide the most efficient gain in hit currently.
I actually remarked, that you are using spirit-shoes. Didn’t you have the cloth ones from one of the abominations?
No, these was what has dropped for me so far. They are still good enough, although i would like the haste more than the crit. Even your haste is not bad, but you would probably benefit better from crit as well.
We had heroic Plague Scientist Boots dropping this week, but I am new in the guild, and a leather user, so I probably have to wait a while before I get my hands on those.
Previously, I would actually be an advocate of letting us roll on cloth. I still am, but a note from a guildie changed my mind: “There might be 8 other people in a raid that wants the cloth boots. It makes more sense that you go for leather because you can use it, when the leather boots would otherwise just be sharded”. Ill pick up the cloth boots eventually, but I wont shy away from spirit if its an upgrade.
Hi Qieth! Reading your post and catching myself on same thoughts )
Yep, after softcap Crit become a bit less valuable then haste. But I totally agree that there is no need to stack haste while forgeting about crit.
Alas, there are a lot of Haste/Crit items which allow us to stack both stats )
Only two slots which worry me is wrists and boots:
1) Wrists: no haste/crit item in ICC (best haste/crit is good old Bejeweled Wizard’s Bracers). My choice here is “The Lady’s Brittle Bracers”. They cloth but BOE so I hope for luck in raid or on AH.
Only alternative I see is Ether-Soaked Bracers (Hit/Haste) from Rotface (10). And heroic version is even bit better then normal Lady’s Bracers due to haste and red socket (even new BIS for me in 264 gear level).
(I assume hit on wrists as a must. Wrists is only slot for which we don’t have crit/haste alternative so best choice is hit till cap)))
2) Boots: Plague Scientist Boots is first choice but yeah – they are cloth so long time to wait.
Alternatives are Boots of the Frozen Seed (Lady 10) – heroic version is good but not every guild have access there (my don’t).
As possible interim I see Blessed Cenarion Boots (craft, haste/spirit).
And Spirit – I was thinking about it but NO.
My gear choice is Hit=cap, crit and haste > softcaps, spirit = 0.
Reason is simple – any stat except hit after cap is better then spirit. Current tier and ICC itemisation is good and allows us to get hit cap with 5 T10 + one random item. After that we are free to stack crit/haste items as we wish.
PS Sorry for a lot of obvious words was just thinking and decided to write down so thoughts.
I have the Lady’s Bristle Bracers, because i need them for hit. They should be rather easy to get, considering that any decent 25 man guild can get her down with relative ease.
Spirit is not “that bad”. Point for point, spirit might suck balls, but most ICC items are running some 100ish spirit – which translates into 33 spell power. Its important to remember that while spirit is worth very little, we get a lot of it when we do, which makes it an acceptable choice. If you do the calculations, the leather boots with spirit from ICC25 (the name eludes me at the moment) aren’t really that bad. They are still an upgrade, and the only people who would take them otherwise are resto druids.
Regarding spirit, I have a very fun time in my 10 man raids as we run with two healers. I’m the guy that they call on to off heal when the two healers need just a little help, and when you’re out of moonkin form healing, that spirit becomes pretty valuable from a mana management perspective.
I personally love the job, because I get to feel like I’m actually playing my druid to his strengths as much as possible.
This is probably sounding crazy, but while I dislike the idea of being a resto druid, and healing is really kind of boring, shifting out of moonkin form to off heal is pretty fun for me.
If I have a choice to further exceed the soft haste cap or grab spirit I’ll go with spirit every time. I just can’t stand wraths getting faster and faster, my knuckles hate me every time.
Checking out logs i see moonkin with almost same gear like mine pushing around 1k and more dps.
I’m following literally what’s written around in elitistjerks, rawr and mmo, trying to optimize my rotation, but still i can’t be satisfied about my numbers:could you give a look at my char?
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Runetotem&cn=Shulfanix
and here’s my last log:
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/twdoorhbd26podc6/details/163/
I have to add that my latency never drops down 120 during raids.
I know i have to improve my activity, and in fight where i can’t use nibelung i just go with hammer of purified flame and scourgelord baton reaching about 32% crit ub.
Thanks in advance and gratz for your blog really really interesting and full of simple and complete answers.
i know u were asking qieth but i had a look at the report and im not sure why maybe its your raid setup but your base sp is higher then mine but my spells do more dmg wrath crits for about 14k and starfire 21-22k. also in my opinion drop some haste and reach the crit cap
hers my wol report for festergut maybe it might help

Be careful with simply comparing one log to each other. There are way too many factors to make it a simply call like that.
Your damage on Festergut could be better (Shulfanix), but that is such a random fight, with bile being thrown around, movement due to spores and so on. As an example, we were doing Festergut heroic yesterday. One a ~10% wipe, I was doing 9,5k DPS (if memory serves me well) but on our kill, i was at a measly 7k DPS. Terrible, but there are too many factors to make it a good fight to compare anything on.
Your Rotface damage, for example, is spot on with the rest of the DPS. But ofcourse, there is an element of randomnes there as well, since you could have gotten zero infections.
Try and get some logs from a fight that looks more like a nuke fight. There are none of those, but some are close; Lady Deathwhisper (if you handle the adds quickly), Saurfang and such are pretty decent to look at.
i agree that comparing on fights such as festergut isnt reliable as there are too many variables in the fight, but my dps on LD averages around 9.5-10k sadly i dont have a wol report for those as i recently changed guild as my old 1 fell apart. all i can say is if you are doing your rotation correctly and still come up with low dps then it is probably your raid setup or just unlucky with eclipse rolling
10k DPS is absolutely fine
Thank you for your replies. I tried to follow nomilk tips, going for crit is more similar to my playstyle, regardless of rawr suggestions that advices reckless in yellow sockets already at my crit rating, so i made some changes, wearing boots of unrelenting storm from beasts hc. Dps still remains the same. I forgot to mention that in my guild clear day: wednesday, our server is affected by brutal lag, so the charts are a bit low for everyone. I will try to see if something goes better on other days. I’m trying to disable grid, recount, leaving just ora2, boss mod and omen running. My pc should be fine, a quad core 9400 2,66 giga htz, with a geforce 9600 gt, not playing with max res neither max details during raids. Maybe my line is a bit lame, living in a little town between the mountains, and of course my activity and rotations could be improved, but i’m working on it.
), including a demo lock.
.
What just makes me angry is that our shaman elemental, whatever fight we are doing is always on top of me, same gear like mine, all socketed reckless and runed.
I forgot to say that we have all casters buffs in raid since our gm is a mage(he likes to have a druid squad for innervate
Anyway, watching at your numbers all i can say is congratulations, hope to be on pair with you one day
But if you want to be on par with “the rest of us” (which you are in some fights), you cannot ignore the advice you ar given
