Thinking with Typhoon

For the last couple of weeks, I feel like I have been championing the cause of Gale Winds. You know, the talent that we all hated during Wrath that seemed like a complete waste of points? The talent that we only really took on the fights like Anub’Arak heroic, where AOE mattered?

Lots of things has changed in Cataclysm, most notibly the fact that Hurricane is terrible for both damage and mana at this point in the game, but also the fact that Typhoon is actually a pretty awesome spell now.

But alas, many people seem to look down on Typhoon and on Gale Winds as a talent. I opt to change that!

Hotfix galore

Logging into WoW on wednesday was fun. But it was also quite disturbing. Testing the new changes to moonkins was interesting, but it didn’t take long to realise that a few things were a little bit off.

Starfall was supposively changed so that it doesn’t pull mobs that you’re not in combat with. In reality, if you are not in combat, starfall doesn’t hit anything. If you are in combat, it will still tag any mob in a 40 yard radius. Something went wrong there, I suppose.

But Starfall was also acting very weird in general. On a single target, I could get anywhere between 9 and 16 stars. On two targets, I got up to a total of 29 stars at best. Three targets gave me 40 stars, and everything was just so eratic that it was hard to figure out excactly what was going on. This was obviously a bug, and was hotfixed on thursday. Not a very big suprise.

But now, another hotfix is in the works. I worry about the repercussions of this, and how you guys will react. Let’s keep it short and simple:

What’s your DPS?

Oh, before I forget, the Moonkin Guide has been updated to match 4.0.6!

Back in Wrath, when I was all blinged out in heroic gear, people used to come up to me and inspect me. Maybe that was because of the awesome tier 10 looks. Maybe it was because I was mounted on Invincible, draped in a pillar of light from the endless supply of moonstones. Who knows..

And now, as my troll is idling in Orgrimmar in the most travelled streets, facing in a way so the sunlight catches the shine of my shoulders, I find that people inspect me once again, and once more, I see people drop their jaw at my awesomeness.

Al right, kidding aside, this was a lead up into the following: When people do happen to notice a person wearing gear which is better than their own, the most common question they ask is “Whats your DPS?”.

Don’t discriminate

Hello world. This is an intervention. You need to know that I care for you, and that I can’t bear to see you pass up on opportunities that would increase your ability to hurt things.

Since before Cataclysm came out, a lot of work has been put into figuring out our stat weights. The numbers are out, and we can adjust to them. Unfortunately, I find that some people cling a little too tightly to these numbers with little perspective to reality.

Mastery is not a bad stat for us. It is certainly our worst stat, but that doesn’t mean that it is bad. Strength is a bad stat for us, as is agility and expertise. No matter how the numbers pan out, mastery does still make you hurt things more.

Imagine yourself as the ugly, fat kid in school. You might really, really like to gety our hands on one of those hot haste/crit girlfriends, but you are not excactly in a position to be picky. There are not many girls around, and most of them have at least some amount of mastery.

But that’s fine! You can still have fun with mastery, and your primary concern should be to find a nice, down to earth girl with a high ilevel. I mean item. I think I’ve confused myself with my metaphor.

The point is, there isn’t excactly an abundance of gear to choose from. If you have a choice between an item with a higher item level, which usually means more intellect, its fine to swap out an int/haste item for a higher level int/mastery item. It will have more mastery than the previous one has haste, and you can reforge some of the mastery and cash in an upgrade to your spell power.

Of course, if your choice is between two items of equal ilevel, one with crit and one with mastery, you would naturally go for the one with crit, even though crit is only slightly – ever so slightly – better than mastery. But if you are comparing a haste item to a mastery item with more spell power, you should not hesitate to take the mastery and reforge it to haste.

Don’t deny yourself an upgrade because you are worried about mastery. Go get that girl!

First raid impressions

“So Qieth, why haven’t you posted anything on the blog for a week?”. Yeah, sorry, a dragon sort of got in the way…

Anyways, Cataclysm is out, I’ve managed to get to level 85, and I’ve been able to run a few instances. Well, quite a few instances, actually. In fact, I’ve been trying to do as many instances as I could in order to gear up.

On sunday, the guild started raiding. We weren’t really supposed to raid for another few weeks, but so many people were already 85 and decently geared, and we decided to give it a shot. While I wasn’t actually in the raid group, the guild did kill Argaloth in Baradin Hold, as well as the first three bosses in Blackwing Descent. On tuesday, we went to take a look at the Bastion of Twilight, and nuked down Halfus Wyrmbraker and Valiona & Theralion.

Why bring a mage?

Putting together raid groups can be troublesome. You need to make sure your group gets as many raid buffs as possible, that you have enough healers to keep the raid alive, and that you have enough tanks to fit the encounter. And with 10 classes, 30 specs, and a mere 25 raid spots to fill, it’s not always a walk in the park.

The obvious choice, of course, is to bring the classes that can perform well, and at the same time give the group a wide range of buffs. I mean, you wouldn’t want to take a class just for its damage, right? And I’ve begun to wonder, why would anyone really bother to bring a mage? I mean, all they give the group is an intellect buff that we can get from warlocks instead, a crit buff on the target that warlocks can bring, and a personal crit buff that they usually give to each other. I mean, lets be fair, how useful are they?

Obviously, this is gibberish. And yet, I find myself cupping my face from time to time, when I see comments such as “Why bring a moonkin?”.

New, new eclipse

I really wanted to join in on the Blizzard developer chat on Twitter. I was waiting up for it to start, only to fall asleep on the couch 30 minutes before it was supposed to start. Waking up 8 hours later, the chat was over and out, but at least I could read the logs. I had a few questions that I wanted answered, so I guess I’ll post them here. Ghostcrawler, could you be a sport and reply when you read this? (well, one can dream, right?)

What I really want to know is:

  • Do we get to keep moonkin form as a permanent shapeshift, or are you planning to empose the same deal on us as with restoration druids?
  • Will we get more choices for customization than what we have in our current talent tree?
  • Will there be more options in the restoration tree, rather than the current 5 points we can put in?
  • Will balance and restoration always be tied to each other, or might we ever see options in the feral tree for our last 10 talent points?
  • What’s the deal with Nature’s Grace?

In any case, Blizzard did answer a lot of questions, but some of them very quite vague. There was no questions about our moonkin form, which means that either nobody was concerned about us maybe losing our forms, or that they didn’t answer because they haven’t decided.
