Final form is final

In the recent developer chat Blizzard had with Best Buy, people asked about the moonkin forms for trolls and worgens. Are the versions on the PTR the final version, or are they just placeholders? The answer was prompt, they are “Final!”.

This caused quite a lot of uproar. It didn’t take more than a few hours on MMO-Champion before a good measure of threads were created, filled with people expressing their… distress, all of them in a clear, calm and productive way. Well, maybe not everybody. Let’s just say that some people didn’t take it too well.

Now, the way that people react to this, I suppose, depends on how they read the answer, or how they assume that Blizzard responds to it. Some people saw this as a dark omen that we will forever be stuck in our age-old moonkin forms, and that Blizzard has no intention of ever updating them.

Feeble flight forms

While we are still waiting for the release of the final versions of the troll and worgen moonkin forms, I thought it was quite exciting to see their respective flight forms. After all, it is something that we will probably have to stare at quite a lot in Cataclysm.

And I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the worgen flight form. It is a treat to the eyes, as majestic and proud as the night elf and tauren crows, looking like a strong and sturdy beast, capable of dominating the skies with its might.

But when I laid my eyes upon the troll fight form, I shrieked back in horror. What has happened to the beautiful birds of the druids? How could this abomination have been introduced? I can just imagine the developer meeting:

- So, what flight form do we have for night elfs?
- Crow.
- And taurens?
- Crow
- Cool. What are you doing with worgens?
- Eeeeh, crow.
- Splendid, how about trolls?
- We’re thinking a disfigured troll with the face of a Predator.

I don’t know if you can quite spot where it went wrong, but somewhere along the line they went “crow, crow, crow, GIANT BAT”.

Maybe I just need to ease into it. Maybe it just takes a bit of time to get used to. Maybe I’m just scared because I was actually planning on going troll. I just have a hard time imagining a druid, who can shapeshift into these magnificant beasts, suddenly switching into a giant, deformed bat. The thought of it kind of disturbs me.

Perhaps I am just overreacting. What do you think?

Musings on moonkin form

A few days ago, a user named Poggn wrote me on Twitter with an alleged troll moonkin form. I was immediately sceptical about it for several reasons: It looked like a simply recoloring of the tauren moonkin form, there had been no official word about it and, well, why would a troll moonkin have horns?

While I was making Poggn take outrageous screenshots that he couldn’t possibly Photoshop, a guildie thought it was just a lot easier to log onto the beta and check for me. He must have been in a conspiracy with Poggn, because he verified the screenshot shortly after. Sorry Poggn.

I am sure you have all seen plenty of screenshots by now – it’s not like I’m revealing anything massive here. But I thought it would be nice to address our moonkin form, both the one we have seen, and my general whishes for the future.

There hasn’t really been a whole lot of moonkin info in the expansion. At least, not compared to what we see for other classes. Sure, there has been a ton of changes, and most of them are very good changes. A lot of our issues have been addressed, but we are still at a point where I feel that moonkins definitely needs a wee bit more of love.

For a while now, I have had this nagging worry that Blizzard would somehow swing around and pull “a resto” on us, and remove moonkin form from our spellbooks. Or make it a use ability like they are doing with restoration druids. Thankfully, Ghostcrawler mentioned the other day that they stand firm in the belief that balance druids are defined by their moonkin form.

There is a lot of grapejuice going around these days about moonkin form being useless in its current state. One argument is about the buffs it brings. We are already sharing all of our buffs with several other classes. So is everyone else. That it continues in Cataclysm is just fine, that’s really how it should be. Every buff should be covered by many classes – it has been Blizzard’s philosophy since Wrath of the Lich King came out, and people seem to think themselves useless if other people can provide the same buffs as them. For the rest of us, we are brought as another buff insurance and the damage we bring.

Sure, 5% haste is provided by other classes in Cataclysm, and there is merit to that argument. In its current state, it would actually allow us to do whatever we like when it comes to being in moonkin form. It would seem really pointless to have a form if we could simply decide to ditch it when were in a raid group. But that is probably going to change. We will get something that buffs us, like moonkin form buffs our intellect and mana regeneration on the live servers.

What would be fun could be further modifiers to our abilities, or if it had a chance to empower us with “Spirit of the Owlbeast”. How about SotO being a proc that empowers the next ability to increase the damage of the next spell by x% or which will automaticly cast the next spell on every enemy within 15 yards of your target. Imagine the AOE we could whip up with that?

I don’t know what Blizzard will do about moonkin form. I am confident that they will make us something spiffy, something that will keep us in moonkin form. And as for the talents, I’m hoping that they will give us some focus soon, much like the lines of the focus we’ve seen them give paladins and the like.

It’s still beta. Everything will be fine.
