Bloggers generally have a habit of blogging reactively to whatever news comes out. That’s how we roll. After all, the whole point of a blog is to share your views on what’s going on.

But it doesn’t hurt to be a bit forthcoming once in a while, so I thought I’d do a little post on the kind of changes I’d like to see for moonkins. I did do a post like this over a year ago, and if I stretch it a little bit, I can argue that a few of those ideas became a reality.

You already know about my thoughts on Wild Mushroom, and it’s nice to see that some of the suggestions came through. Of course, I have no delusions that my ideas are the pivot point for moonkin changes, but if Ghostcrawler should happen to stop by here while browsing for tips for his moonkin alt, I wouldn’t want him to be disappointed.

Area of little effect

Back in Wrath of the Lich King, moonkins were the unmentioned kings of AOE. On fights where it really mattered (think Anub’Arak and the like), we could pull out some serious deeps with a well timed starfall and chain casting hurricane inside Nature’s Grace. These days, however, I feel that–

Wait. Sorry. I have to say this. I fall asleep at night dreaming about the day when I can stop making references back to Wrath of the Lich King. I don’t quite feel that we do Cataclysm justice by continuously comparing it to WOTLK. We need to look ahead. Work with what we’ve got. I’ll stop living in nostalgia now!

Cataclysm has changed the way we handle AOE, for better and for worse. I think its time we take a good, long look at our AOE abilities.

Glyphs, glyphs, glyphs

Attention! I am a massive tool! Please check the “best glyphs” list again for an update!

So, I wanted to talk a bit about Glyphs. There will probably still be glyph changes around, but for now, I want to talk to what is available and what we have in store.

Playing on the PTR, I’ve been working hard on trying to settle in with a new rotation. I’ll admit, it’s not easy to get used to. I had to concentrate quite a lot on not forgetting starfall, which is odd, since I am usually spot on with that. Starsurge feels odd to get into our rotation as well, but I guess its just a matter of getting used to it. When I started out as a moonkin, my rotation was so messy, so having to learn something new probably isn’t that bad.

But now it is time to see how our glyphs might affect our gameplay. Lets theorycraft!

Glyphs ‘R Us

I often get questions regarding which glyphs to pick for your all-round moonkin spec, and while some of them are pretty obvious, there are a few that always cause much debate.

So lets take a look at the current moonkin glyphs, and talk about which benefit us the most, and when to pick one over the other. This is, ofcourse, purely from a PvE perspective. Things are a whole lot different when it comes to battlegrounds or arena, and I will not cover them from fear of giving out some seriously bad advice.

There are 11 glyphs that we could possibly ever consider to use. These are Glyph of Barkskin, Entangling Roots, Focus, Hurricane, Innervate, Insect Swarm, Monsoon, Moonfire, Starfall, Starfire and Wrath. The list is actually quite long, but most of them have no real place in a PvE setting.

Lets look at them in order of usefulness.

3.3 live this week

Just thought i would make a small update, because I know you will be visiting my blog before you go to MMO-champion. According to Boubouille, patch 3.3 will be online this week. Yay!

I don’t know how he got this information, cause it’s not official yet, but I’ll take his word for it. Here is a summary of the changes specific to moonkins:

  • Rebirth: The cooldown on this spell has been lowered from 20 minutes down to 10 minutes. Cannot be used in Arenas.
  • Talents
    • Balance
      • Eclipse: This effect will not activate again within 15 seconds of either type of Eclipse effect firing, in addition to the existing 30-second cooldown for each type of Eclipse.
      • Force of Nature: Health on the treants has been increased.
  • Pets
    • Avoidance (passive): Now reduces the damage your pets take from area-of-effect damage by 90%, but no longer applies to area-of-effect damage caused by other players.
  • Bug fixes
    • Glyph of Hurricane: Now modifies the spell tooltip on Hurricane to indicate the spell also applies a movement slowing effect.
    • Hurricane: When cast from Bear Form, Cat Form, or Dire Bear Form, this spell will now channel properly instead of stopping the channel as soon as the shapeshift is cancelled.

Also. while it is not covered in the official patch notes, tier 8 2-piece set bonus should be nerfed to 7%, while the percentage gained on Eclipse in general is increased by 10%.
